Altru Designated as Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacements

Grand Forks, ND – Altru Health System was recently designated as a Blue Distinction® Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Altru met nationally established quality care and outcomes criteria developed with input from the medical community, and also met cost measures that address consumers’ needs for affordable health care.

“Being recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield is validation of the quality care provided to knee and hip replacement patients,” said Heather Strandell, administrative director of care management at Altru. “The designation process evaluates the policies, physician practices, quality, safety and outcome data on these types of procedures. The Blue Distinction honor proves that we provide excellent care for our patients.”

One of the key components of Altru’s Joint Replacement Center is patient education and participation.

”The patient is heavily involved from the very beginning,” said Mark Erickson, coordinator of the Joint Replacement Center. “We want the patient to know that their participation is crucial to the success of their joint replacement. After the joint is replaced by their surgeon, we begin a very active therapy program. It’s then the patient’s job to put the therapy in action, both during the group sessions following surgery and after discharge at home.”
