TEARS to Host Survivors of Suicide Event

Grand Forks, ND – TEARS (Together we Educate About the Realities of Suicide) Suicide Prevention Project will host an event in conjunction with International Survivors of Suicide Day, Saturday, Nov. 23 from 1-3 p.m. at Altru Psychiatry Center. The event is free and open to the public.

“It’s important to continually support people who have lost a loved one to suicide,” said Mike DeWald, manager of outpatient psychiatry services at Altru Health System. “This event is especially useful to the newly bereaved due to a suicide of a family member or friend. However, all participants will benefit from the information and sharing opportunity.”

Through a DVD presentation and discussion, individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide, as well as mental health experts, will offer support to those in attendance. The event allows survivors of suicide to connect with other survivors within the community.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, every 15 minutes, one person takes their own life through suicide. For every person who dies by suicide, there are numerous survivors left behind to cope.
