The essence of our commitment is displayed by the word We. "We" is more than the employees of Altru. It's the coordination of an entire region working together to improve health and enrich lives.
Altru continually seeks involvement with activities and partnerships in the region which have a common mission. Our philosophy is that by working together, all individuals are better served.
Below you will find a few ways We are working across the region to improve health and enrich life.
Mayo Clinic Care Network
Sanny and Jerry Ryan Center for Prevention and Genetics
Sanny and Jerry Ryan’s vision for further creating a better well-being for the community is being fulfilled through the inception of the Sanny and Jerry Ryan Center for Prevention and Genetics. The first of its kind in the region, the Center will encourage individuals to think about their health through preventive measures before it comes medically necessary to seek care. The shift from treating illness to preventing disease creates a catalyst which can change the direction of a national epidemic contributing to many disease processes.
With access to key professionals, programming and state-of-the art technology, the Sanny and Jerry Ryan Center for Prevention and Genetics will utilize genetic information to help people understand their risks, prevent, help manage and, in some cases, reduce the expression of inherited disease.
For generations, the Ryan family has been a fixture in the Grand Forks and East Grand Forks communities. Both Sanny and Jerry Ryan have committed their lives to locally supporting community activities and seeking opportunities to fill needs where they exist. They’ve also been strong proponents of health and wellness. Loyal supporters of Altru Health System, their generosity has made a significant difference to hundreds of thousands of patients throughout the region.
Sanny and Jerry Ryan’s vision of wellness leaves a legacy which benefits the community and its future generations.
Partnerships in Community Wellness
Altru Health System, the Grand Forks Park District and Altru Family YMCA have been working together to create medically based programs that encourage enhanced wellness in the community.
Throughout their long history, each organization has continually sought ways to help one another. In doing so, a healthier future is taking shape for the entire community.
These programs are featured in the Sanny and Jerry Ryan Center for Prevention and Genetics, based in Choice Health and Fitness. Elements of the programs will also be available at Altru Family YMCA. The programs are tailored to meet the needs of each organization’s clientele and all will have a medical wellness component.
Initial programming will focus on seven key areas and will include an element of community education:
- Move well
- Eat well
- Heart health
The team of professionals consists of therapists, physicians, a chiropractor, dietitians, health and wellness specialists, athletic trainers and personal trainers, who all work closely to transition patients seamlessly from medical care to a wellness approach.

Community Health Improvement
Altru is working with several leading health and fitness agencies in Grand Forks to coordinate a community health improvement project. The project begins with a community health assessment to gather information, identify needs and determine a plan of action to solve the biggest health problems in our community. Altru will work closely with Grand Forks Public Health, CVIC, the Grand Forks Park District and other health agencies.
