Altru Cancer Center Golf Tournament Raises $103,000 for Filling the Gap and Caring for Kids

Grand Forks, N.D. – The biggest fundraiser of the year for Filling the Gap and Caring for Kids, the Altru Cancer Center Golf Tournament, was held June 8 at the Grand Forks Country Club. Golfers, sponsors and volunteers came together and raised over $103,000. In its fifteen-year history, the tournament has raised over $1 million for Filling the Gap and over $100,000 for Caring for Kids.

Filling the Gap helps provide financially eligible patients with gas cards, nutritional supplements and lodging assistance when overnight stays are necessary. These items are not typically covered by insurance, yet can dramatically affect a patient’s quality of life. In 2016, over $176,000 was given to patients in need through the program.

“Filling the Gap helps our patients immensely by meeting basic needs,” says Beth Nelson, manager of Altru Cancer Center. “This program provides for nutritional supplements for all patients regardless of income and also helps ‘fill the gap’ financially eligible patients when they travel distances for their care, through hotel stays, gas cards or even taxi rides if they live in town and don't have a ride or feel well enough to drive.”

Caring for Kids is a grant program for kids with chronic conditions and their families.

It was established to improve the quality of life for pediatric patients and their families by lifting some of their financial burden.

“Thanks to donors generous gifts 12 families with children battling chronic health conditions were able to travel 16,534 miles during 31 trips throughout the tri-state area in the past 6 months,” says Melissa Swenson, child life specialist at Altru. “They have spent 33 nights in a motel to be close to their child who needs specialty medical care. Without this support these trips would be a financial burden on these families.”
