About the Altru Health Foundation
Established more than 28 years ago, Altru Health Foundation has raised over $25 million through the support of caring individuals, foundations and organizations. These funds help to sustain the patient care programs and services at Altru Health System that save and improve the lives of thousands of North Dakota and Minnesota residents and visitors every year.
A Nonprofit, Community-Owned Hospital
Did you know that community-owned hospitals provide 95 percent of all vital but often unprofitable health services? As Grand Forks' only community-owned hospital, Altru Health System reinvests all available revenues into programs, equipment, facilities and medical staff. We are governed by a local board of directors who serve without pay and whose interests lie in placing patients before profits, and community needs before returns.
Why Your Help Is Needed
Today nonprofit health care facilities across the nation face some of the most trying challenges in the history of health care:
- Uncertain government healthcare regulations
- Low reimbursements for services
- Rising uninsured population
Only through the financial investment of committed donors can Altru Health System continue to provide excellent, leading-edge medical care in a warm and healing environment. We hope you will join us in helping to secure a legacy of excellent medical care for your community.
Fourteen dedicated board members govern Altru Health Foundation activities.

Recent Foundation grants include:
Altru's Professional Nurse Committee (PNC) - $11,100 for nurse credentialing (and the costs associated with the process), educational conferences and or specific/specialized educational sessions. $5,000 goes for nursing scholarships for Altru employees that are actively pursuing their nursing degree through UND College of Nursing, Northland Community and Technical College or by correspondence.
