Altru Cancer Center Golf Tournament Raises $97,500 for Filling the Gap

Altru Health System, Grand Forks, ND – The biggest fund raiser of the year for Filling the Gap, the Altru Cancer Center Golf Tournament, sold out months in advance. Golfers, sponsors, and volunteers all came together for the 13th annual tournament on June 11, raising over $97,500 for Filling the Gap.

Filling the Gap helps provide financially eligible patients with gas cards, nutritional supplements, and lodging assistance when overnight stays are necessary. These items are not typically covered by insurance, yet can dramatically affect a patient’s quality of life. In 2014, over $157,000 was given to patients in need through the program.

“I didn’t know how I was going to make the drive back and forth every day. Many people don’t realize what a big deal it is to have the expense of driving,” says Art Anderson, patient of Altru Cancer Center who was diagnosed with leukemia and prostate cancer in late Fall 2014. He’s been receiving daily treatments at Altru Cancer Center since March, traveling 100 miles each day from Thief River Falls. “Filling the Gap has taken a huge burden off me. I’m so thankful for this program and the care I receive at Altru.”

In the past twelve years, the Altru Cancer Center Golf Tournament has raised over $954,000 for Filling the Gap. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or donating to Filling the Gap, please contact Randy Schoenborn at or 701.780.5618.
