Altru Hosts Prostate Cancer Screening Event

Altru Health System, Grand Forks, N.DAltru encourages all men ages 55-69, who are not current urology patients, to get screened for prostate cancer. In observance of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Altru will host a prostate cancer screening event on Thursday September 24 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Altru Cancer Center. Individuals must call (701) 780.5396 for an appointment. Screening is free of charge.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men, and is the second leading killer (behind lung cancer). Prostate cancer screening includes a PSA (protein-specific antigen) blood test and DRE (digital rectal exam). PSA, produced by the prostate gland, is a protein detected in the blood. PSA may be an indicator of an enlarged prostate, an infection of the prostate, or perhaps cancer. A PSA blood level test is the best option for early detection of prostate cancer because it states whether or not an individual needs further testing. Risk factors for prostate cancer include family history, age, and racial/ethnic background as well as lifestyle factors.

Individuals will need to call for an appointment ((701) 780.5396) to determine if they fit within screening guidelines which include:

  1. Men 55-69 years of age.
  2. Not a current urology patient.
