Dr. Girma Makonnen Joins Altru Health System

Altru Health System, Grand Forks, ND –Girma Makonnen, MD, joins the neurosurgery team at Altru Health System. “My patients, their families and I are a team. I’m here to explain what’s happening and to make the recommendation, but my patients are part of the decision,” says Dr. Girma Makonnen. “It’s rewarding to see the successes we have together."

Dr. Makonnen earned his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed his residency in neurological surgery from Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. He continued with a fellowship in neurosurgery from Lynchburg General Hospital in Virginia. Before earning his medical degree, Dr. Makonnen attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he received his doctor of pharmacy degree.

Dr. Makonnen grew up in Ethiopia. After beginning school in the United States, he was fascinated by science. He studied pharmacy and continued on to become a neurosurgeon. Dr. Makonnen completed a global and rural neurosurgery fellowship and spent half a year teaching in Tanzania, Africa. Throughout his years in school, he did research and has taught others. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis, soccer and basketball, watching all sports and reading.
