If you are experiencing hip pain for 1-2 months or longer, or if your pain is severe, it’s time to seek care. If your pain is a result of a fall, it is important to seek care immediately to understand if you have a fracture.
Altru Advanced Orthopedics offers superior treatments for joint care. Our team is focused on providing the highest level of care and establishing a unique treatment plan for each patient.
Our orthopedics team will look to non-replacement options first, such as physical therapy or strengthening exercises. However, when the time is right for a joint replacement, Altru offers anterior approach hip replacement, an advanced procedure that may offer less pain and a quicker recovery.
Hip Replacement Treatments
At Altru Advanced Orthopedics, we offer multiple advanced hip replacement procedures. You'll work with your doctor to determine which option is right for you. Some of our most advanced options include Mako™ Robotic Arm assisted total hip replacement and Anterior Approach Hip Replacement. We are continually advancing our technologies to offer the best procedure options available.
Mako™ Robotic Arm Assisted Total Hip Replacement
Altru Advanced Orthopedics offers total hip replacement with the advanced technology of the Mako Robotic Arm.
Using highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic technology, the Mako Robotic Arm offers incredibly accurate and individualized placement. Using the patient’s CT scan, a 3-D model is created to specifically plan the procedure for each patient’s unique anatomy, considering implant size, orientation, and the center of rotation for the acetabular cup and hip stem. During the procedure, the robotic arm provides surgeon Dr. Jeremy Gardner with real-time data and feedback, allowing him to fine-tune the implant positioning, ensuring results are optimal for the patient. This technology has been shown to reduce post-replacement complications, such as dislocations, impingement and leg length discrepancies.
Key Benefits for Patients
Total hip replacement with the Mako™ Robotic Arm can help patients return to an active, pain-free lifestyle. Benefits may include:
- Extremely high accuracy of anatomical placement
- Low risk of dislocation and impingement
- More accurate leg length restoration compared to manual replacement
- Less pain
- Quicker recovery
- Minimal blood loss during the procedure
Your surgeon will work with you to determine if total hip replacement utilizing the robotic arm is right for you, or if a different option suits you best.
Anterior Approach Hip Replacement
At Altru, we proudly offer the anterior approach hip replacement. This alternative technique provides:
- Potential for less pain
- Smaller incisions with reduced scarring
- Minimized muscle damage
- Potential for improved mobility
Anterior approach hip replacement allows Dr. Jeremy Gardner, our orthopedic surgeon, to work between muscles and tissues without detaching them from either the hip or thighbones. This may result in a swifter recovery and shorter hospital stay for patients. Altru is the first and only provider in Grand Forks to offer the anterior approach.
What to Expect
Anterior approach hip replacements are done at Altru Specialty Center. On average, patients will stay at our joint replacement center for 1-2 days after the procedure to ensure initial recovery goes smoothly. Dedicated physical therapists will begin therapy during your stay, and you will also have outpatient therapy for 4-6 weeks. Your physician will determine your specific recovery time based on your progress. You can expect to return to the activity level appropriate for your age and ability that you enjoyed prior to injury or chronic pain.
