Altru Announces Major Expansion

Fueled by unprecedented growth with our physician group, we are planning a major expansion in Grand Forks. This expansion further supports our mission to improve the health and enrich the lives of our patients. Our plans include expansion and renovation of the hospital and main clinic facilities on Columbia Road and acquiring the clinic, hospital and strip mall facilities owned by the Aurora group.

Improving access to care is one of our main priorities. And, we’ve recruited 41 physicians to start practice in Grand Forks in 2011 and 2012. In addition to those starting this year, our plans call for adding even more doctors to our clinics in Grand Forks over the next few years. Adding all of these physicians increases access to care. It also requires additional space and we are quickly running out of space. This acquisition helps us ensure care is immediately available to our patients while we continue our expansion plan on our Columbia Road campus.

Columbia Road Campus Expansion

Altru Hospital on Columbia Road 2020

Altru completed a master plan last March with several priorities:

  • Improve the care experience for patients, especially by making more hospital rooms private
  • Accommodate growth fueled by physician recruitment
  • Relieve congestion at the Columbia Road campus by moving services to other locations in the Grand Cities
  • Replace aging infrastructure and facilities in Grand Forks

Plans for our Columbia Road campus call for replacing Altru Hospital in three phases and is expected to be completed in 2020. The main clinic would be replaced in 2022. Building next to existing facilities, while keeping everything running, forces Altru to break larger projects into multiple phases.

Discussions are underway to determine what services will shift to the new locations. As information is available, it will be shared with the public.

Your Questions

We know you have questions related to our expansion plans. We’ve attempted to answer several here. If you have other questions, please send them to news@altru.org and we’ll do our best to answer.

Why did Altru purchase Aurora Medical Park?

Unprecedented growth with Altru’s physician group and ensuring patients continue to have good access to care has been the driving factor in Altru’s decision to purchase buildings within Aurora Medical Park.

Altru has recruited 41 physicians to start practice in Grand Forks in 2011 and 2012. Altru is working to add even more doctors to its clinics in Grand Forks over the next few years. Adding these physicians means needing additional space, whereas Altru’s Columbia Road campus is quickly running out of space.

To accommodate physician growth and improve the care experience for patients, Altru completed a master plan last March. The plan focused on relieving congestion at the Columbia Road campus by moving services to other locations in the Grand Cities and replacing aging infrastructure and facilities in Grand Forks. As plans unfolded, simply building new facilities would take too long. Purchasing the hospital, clinic, and strip mall facilities on South Washington Street offers a bridging plan and gives us time to implement plans for the Columbia Road campus. Additionally, it provides another access point for patients seeking care at Altru.

Is that a net of 41 physicians?

That is the number of physicians who are starting practice.  Of course, there will always be some retirements and physicians who leave, but even on a net basis it will be a huge number of additions.

What buildings are included within the purchase?

The clinic, hospital and strip mall located at Aurora Medical Park are included in the real estate transaction.

As a patient, how does this affect me?

This will improve access and make more services available for all patients.

What services will Altru provide in this location?

Detailed planning is in the works, and we will provide information as that process progresses.

When does the purchase take place?

The transaction will be complete this spring.

Will non-Altru physicians or entities remain in Aurora Medical Park?

Altru will honor the terms of leases that are in place; if existing tenants want to terminate their leases early, that too will be granted.

Will Altru operate the hospital?

Altru plans to fully utilize the space. Detailed planning is in process and we will have more information once that is complete.

What are the full details of the master plan?

Looking to the future needs of health care for our patients, Altru completed a master plan last March with several priorities: improve the care experience for patients, especially by making more hospital rooms private, accommodate growth fueled by physician recruitment, relieve congestion at the Columbia Road campus by moving services to other locations in the Grand Cities, and replace aging infrastructure and facilities in Grand Forks.

Plans for the Columbia Road campus call for replacing Altru Hospital in three phases and is expected to be completed in 2020. The main clinic would be replaced in 2022. Building next to existing facilities, while keeping everything running, requires that we break larger projects into multiple phases. The resulting long timeline required us to look off campus for additional space. The acquisition helps Altru ensure care is immediately available for our patients.

If this is a bridging plan, when the Columbia Road campus is done, will we continue to operate out there?

Yes. Altru’s master plan calls for reducing congestion at the Columbia Road campus by moving services to other locations in the Grand Cities. This site offers additional locations for us to conveniently serve our patients.

Will Altru continue to build Altru Wellness Village Clinic next to Choice Health & Fitness?

We, of course, continue our construction of our facilities within Choice Health & Fitness.  Altru has suspended construction on our Clinic at Altru Wellness Village; discussions related to how that facility fits with our plans now that we’ve purchased the new facilities are underway.

Does Altru have positions open?

Altru has many job openings; former Doctors Hospital employees may well qualify for some of these openings. With this, we encourage those interested in employment with Altru to apply online for positions they qualify. Altru's recruiters are also available to discuss interests, background, experience, etc., with potential applicants. Those interested in speaking with a recruiter should call 701.780.5115.

What is the cost of this purchase?

Per the seller’s request, specific details related to the transaction, including purchase price, are to remain confidential.

Was Mayo Clinic involved in this purchase?

We’ve made Mayo Clinic aware of the transaction. The purchase is between Altru and the owners of Aurora Medical Park.

Will non-Altru physicians still be able to see patients at our hospitals?

Yes.

Why are you purchasing the Aurora space now?

Unprecedented growth of our physician staff has created the need for more space.  In 2011 and 2012, Altru will be starting 41 new physicians in Grand Forks, and we need space.
