Pregnancy Health & Wellness
It is important that pregnant women take great care of themselves before, during and after pregnancy. Being healthy can make your pregnancy a normal and enjoyable experience and prepares your baby for a healthy entrance into the world.
Your baby's source of nutrition and energy for growth comes directly from you. In addition to eating three balanced meals, healthy snacks can provide the nutrients and energy needed for growth during your pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.
- Eat low fat foods that contain carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein and water.
- Divide what you eat into small meals and snacks throughout the day. This gives you constant energy.
For more pregnancy nutrition and a list of suggested snacks, review the Pregnancy Food Pyramid.
Remaining active during your pregnancy provides the energy you and your baby need. The intensity and types of exercise depends on many conditions - stage of pregnancy, level of activity prior to pregnancy, pregnancy conditions, etc. - so it is important to visit with your care provider about what exercise is best for you and your baby.
Pregnancy Wellness & Conditions
Your pregnancy should be closely monitored by a physician or care provider. If you experience any complications or discomfort, share it with your provider.
To help your family get a healthy start, Altru's Family Birthing Center proudly offers the resources of our experienced staff and community programs.
Perinatal Home Care Program
Your physician may recommend you for the Perinatal Home Care Program if you have experienced a high risk pregnancy. This program includes scheduled home visits from a professional registered nurse to monitor your condition. Since not all conditions are safe for home monitoring, your physician will make the appropriate referral decision.
