Internal medicine physicians--internists--are doctors who have extensive and broad training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases primarily affecting adults. They care for the whole patient and treat all illnesses, no matter how simple or complex, including mental illness and substance abuse.
Internists also promote disease prevention by encouraging healthy lifestyles, immunizations and the use of certain medications. They are specially trained to diagnose complex medical problems and treat severe chronic illnesses. Altru's Internal Medicine physicians are experts in caring for the elderly with multiple medical problems, patients residing in nursing homes and severely ill hospitalized patients. They work with nurse practitioners or physician assistants to improve access to care and complement their practice.
Some internists choose to receive additional training and "subspecialize" in one area of internal medicine. Altru Clinic has subspecialists in Allergy and Immunology, Heart Services, Endocrinology (Diabetes and Glandular Disorders), Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology (Kidneys), Hematology and Oncology (Blood Disorders and Cancer), Rheumatology (Arthritis) and Pulmonary Medicine (Lungs). These physicians function primarily as consultants to other doctors.
Altru Health System has over 20 Internal Medicine health care providers at Altru Clinic - Main, Altru Clinic - Family Medicine Center and our branch clinics throughout our service area. To make an appointment with one of these internists call (701) 780-6000.
