Joint Replacement Center

Our goal is to get patients back to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible.

At the core of Altru’s Joint Replacement Center is our comprehensive education and exercise program, beginning before surgery and continuing with group physical and occupational therapy after surgery. We use minimally invasive surgical procedures, which equals less damage to surrounding tissue and faster recovery times. And, our unique group program provides excellent teaching and learning opportunities designed to jumpstart your recovery process.

Altru's Joint Replacement Center is located within Altru Specialty Center.

Am I a Candidate for Joint Replacement

Joint replacement is becoming more and more common. Over 1 million Americans have a hip or knee replaced each year. Joint replacement may help you live an active, pain-free life.

Over time, joints can become damaged by arthritis and other diseases, sports injuries or simply years of use. This can cause pain, stiffness and swelling. When determining if joint replacement is right for you, here are a few questions to consider:

Does your joint pain keep you awake at night?

  • Do you have a family history of osteoarthritis?
  • Are you experiencing mobility restrictions due to joint pain?
  • Is your pain keeping you from doing things you enjoy?

While candidates for joint replacement are not easily recognized by age or activity level, the best step forward is to talk to your doctor. Give us a call at 701.780.5441.

What to Expect

Over the course of your surgery, recovery and rehabilitation, we want you to be fully informed and prepared. Joint Replacement Center patients attend a comprehensive pre-op education class, which covers:

  • pre-op physical therapy,
  • the course of your hospitalization and
  • discharge planning.

During your stay, you will participate with other joint replacement patients in group physical therapy. To promote a sense of wellness, we encourage you to wear your own clothes while in the hospital. Our expert team will work with you to meet your physical goals, as well as nurture your spirit.

Anterior Approach: Hip Replacement

Altru's orthopedic surgeons offer a variety of joint replacement techniques, from traditional to minimally invasive, to fit the needs of each individual. We proudly offer the anterior approach to hip replacement. This alternative technique provides:

  • potential for less pain
  • smaller incisions with reduced scarring
  • minimized muscle damage
  • improved mobility

Frontal entry allows the surgeon to work between muscles and tissues without detaching them from either the hip or thighbones. This may result in a swifter recovery and shorter hospital stay for patients, due to less muscular damage. Altru is the first and only provider in Grand Forks to offer the anterior approach.

Recovery Coach

Recovering from joint replacement is easier if you have someone to help you along the way. That’s why the role of your coach is so important to your recovery.

Your coach is a person you designate for support and to help you prepare for and recover from your joint replacement procedure. This can be a spouse, friend or family member who will help and encourage you throughout the experience.
