Altru Main Clinic Experiencing Major Structural Issue

January 3, 2017 | 4:10 p.m. Update

For the continued safety of our patients and staff, Altru Main Clinic will remain closed throughout this week. Departments have temporarily relocated, and we are continuing to see patients in alternative locations.

Two external engineering firms are conducting a series of assessments of the building. We are trusting the structural experts to guide our next steps.

“We are taking this matter very seriously. We do not want anyone in the main clinic until we are 100 percent positive it’s a safe environment for our patients and staff,” explains Dr. Eric Lunn, president of Altru Health System. “If that requires more time to ensure the structural safety, it’s worth the temporary delay in re-opening.”

Once we have final confirmation that the building is completely safe, we will reopen.

*Please note: General Surgery has moved to Interventional Pain Management, and Urology has moved to Orthopedics, both in Altru Professional Center. Ultrasound is now relocated to Altru Family Medicine Center.

4:30 p.m. Update

The following Main Clinic departments will be temporarily relocated Tuesday, January 3. Regular appointments will continue as scheduled in these alternative locations. Staff and patients should report to the following locations:

Allergy shots will require 24 hour notice and will be given at Altru 1300 Columbia in Occupational Health. Please call 701.780.6400 to schedule.

We will continue to contact patients with details about relocated appointments until normal operations resume.

12:15 p.m. Update

All Main Clinic departments are temporarily relocated and functioning today. All appointments scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, 2017 will also be at temporary locations. Patients with scheduled appointments will be contacted with further information and location updates will be announced this afternoon. Altru’s Pediatric Walk-In Clinic will operate tomorrow morning from 8:30-11 a.m. at Altru’s Family Medicine Center. Prescriptions filled at Altru Main Clinic Pharmacy can be picked up at Altru Family Medicine Center Pharmacy. We thank all patients for their continued understanding.

7:30 a.m. Update

Regular phone numbers have been redirected during the temporary relocations, so patients can now call the regular appointment numbers (instead of 701.780.4300).

Altru's Pediatric Clinic will operate normal hours Saturday, December 31, at Altru Family Medicine Center.

7:15 p.m. Update

The following departments will be rescheduling appointments: Audiology, ENT, Mammography, Breast Center, Ophthalmology. All other Main Clinic departments will continue as scheduled in alternative locations.

Medications at Main Clinic Pharmacy have been relocated to Family Medicine Center Pharmacy for pick up.

All radiology procedures have been relocated to the Cath Lab.

Please note that Altru Main Clinic is a completely separate building from Altru Hospital and Altru Cancer Center. All other buildings are safe and secure at this time.

Patients with immediate questions or concerns should call 701.780.4300.

4:45 p.m. Update

Experts from Grand Forks Fire Department, EAPC and Construction Engineers have further assessed the situation. We have found that a 16" beam failed, and we are working to prevent further damage to the structure and to stabilize it. For the safety of our staff and patients, we will not be utilizing the facility until we declare it all clear. Cause is unknown until further analysis.

We are also working on plans for next week if the issue is not resolved.

Patients with immediate questions or concerns should call 701.780.4300.

4:15 p.m. Update

Patients with appointments scheduled for Friday, December 30, will be contacted by Altru staff to inform them of an alternative clinic location with their current appointment time.

This affects the following Main Clinic departments: Cardiology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease, Diabetes Center, Dietitians, Pulmonary, Allergy, Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Wound, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Anti-Coagulation, ENT, OB/GYN, Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Outpatient Procedure Center, Ultrasound, Mammography, Diagnostic Radiology and Breast Center.

We are working to set up a phone number for patients who have specific questions.

As of 2:35 p.m., Altru Main Clinic is experiencing a major structural issue which is currently being investigated. Staff and patients are immediately being relocated, and patients being redirected. All emergent patient needs previously scheduled at the Main Clinic will be redirected from Main Clinic to Urgent Care or Emergency Room.

Safety of patients and staff is our primary concern. We will provide an update of the situation by 4 p.m.
