Altru Clinic to Begin Offering 3D Mammography
Grand Forks, N.D. – Altru Clinic in Crookston announces the availability of 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, a technology to assist with the accuracy of diagnosing breast cancer. 3D mammography is a revolutionary technology that produces sharp 3D images, facilitating the radiologists’ ability to clearly identify and characterize individual breast structures, allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnosis.
"Our goal is to make the patient experience at Altru Clinic as smooth as possible," says Julie Perrine, radiographic technologist/mammographer. "3D mammography provides a 3D image, which can prove that an area that looked questionable in a traditional mammogram is normal tissue. This leads to fewer callbacks and less anxiety for our patients. We are pleased to be offering this cutting-edge technology to our region in a clinical setting."
By offering 3D mammography, Altru Clinic aims to increase the number of women being screened, and provide earlier and more accurate detection. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 97 percent.
