Altru’s Gala raises over $410,000 to Support Suicide Prevention & Education
Altru Health System, Grand Forks, ND – Altru Health Foundation, along with main event sponsor Alerus, hosted the thirteenth annual Altru’s Gala on September 30, 2017 at the Alerus Center. Over $410,000 was raised to support suicide prevention and education in Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the region.
One hundred percent of the funds raised will go directly to suicide prevention and support in our community and throughout the region.
Suicide has touched many lives in the Grand Forks and East Grand Forks communities and the region. Nationally every 30 seconds someone attempts a suicide and every 12.3 minutes one is completed.
“We chose suicide prevention and education for the 2017 Gala because it is one of the top identified health needs from the recent community needs assessment,” explains Jon Green, Executive Director at Altru Health Foundation. “Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young adults in the United States between the ages of 14 and 25. By choosing this important mental health need, we not only raise funds to support the work of mental health professionals, we also provide the education that will hopefully save lives.”
The community and schools are already working to educate and prevent suicide through funds raised by the TEARS walk. TEARS (Together we Educate About the Realities of Suicide) Suicide Awareness was established to support individuals and families who have lost a loved one to suicide and also provide important education in hopes of preventing suicide in the Grand Forks and East Grand Forks communities and the surrounding region. "The TEARS suicide prevention committee is honored to have been chosen for Altru’s Gala,” exclaimed Sandy Kovar, part of the TEARS suicide prevention committee. “Education is the key to prevent suicide and to support those affected."
