Dr. Mevan Wijetunga Joins Altru Health System
Grand Forks, N.D. – Mevan Wijetunga, MD is joining the cardiology team at Altru Health System. He is a board-certified and specializes in cardiac electrophysiology, or management of heart rhythm disorders. He performs procedures such as implementation of cardiac monitors, pacemakers and defibrillators, as well as catheter based ablations of specific heart rhythm disorders.

Dr. Wijetunga earned his medical degree from Uppsala University School of Medicine in Uppsala, Sweden. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Internship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii. He went on to complete his Cardiovascular Medicine and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowships at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Outside of work, Dr. Wijetunga enjoys spending time with his family and friends, reading, listening to music, traveling and exercise as often as he can. He is passionate about extending cardiac electrophysiology services to other places around the world, particularly for populations who cannot financially afford these services. Along with his colleagues, he’s been involved with volunteering by setting up cardiac electrophysiology laboratories, physician education and recycling of devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
Dr. Wijetunga is fluent in English, Sinhalese, Swedish and has working knowledge of the Norwegian language.
