While our site remains open during this time, the highest priority of PCL/Community is the well-being of our community employees, their families and our partners. As the COVID-19 issues and impacts rapidly evolve, we are closely monitoring these changes and following guidelines supplied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. Along with these guidelines, we are taking additional precautions to protect our client’s project sites and offices to ensure business continuity across our company.

This week, we took a “virtual walk” through our project’s construction model. We had a high-level overview of the necessary steps and standards for building highly functional areas in the Central Sterile space, MRI and CT labs and the Operating suites. This valuable information will benefit our construction process going forward. We want to thank Jonathan Lowrey (PCL/CC), Josh Kehrwald (JLG) and Tony Erickson (Altru) for sharing with us some Intel on the programming of the new Altru Replacement Hospital.

So, I just want to take this opportunity to share a couple of our successes over the last couple weeks. First, our MEP Team has done a great job in getting our Physical Plant work all completed in order to get this upcoming cooling season’s system in place and on schedule. This was all part of the tunnel that we removed and all of those utilities we had to relocate. Nice work, Team! Now, the next success story I’ll share is about the foundation installations and where the tunnel used to exist. Today, we are placing concrete in the last foundation wall, which will allow us to start the next phase: connecting the east and west portions of the building together. Soon you’ll be able to see the entire main floor stretch right across the building footprint. This is really an exciting time for our team and we hope it is for you, as well. Have a great week everyone, and we’ll chat more next week!

March 2-March 6

Daylight savings time is just around the corner and we’re excited for the longer days, as activity on site is ramping up. This week, we began the excavation for the Area A foundations. With this ongoing excavation, we’ve had to get creative and build a bridge along the south side of site for our cross-site access.

February 17-21

Due to the extreme cold weather this week, production out in the field slowed down.

But inside our warmer enclosed areas (Physical Plant and the west half of the project), our mechanical contractor has been making great progress with the instillation of the chilled water piping which is required to be set in place in time for cleaning & flushing on March 9th. Have a great Valentine's weekend all!

February 10-14

Prior to Christmas, we were very excited about the demolition of the old tunnel. This week, we followed that up by reaching a long awaited goal: we finally made the connection from the west half of the new hospital’s foundations to meet the east half! Achieving this milestone makes me extremely proud of the work and collaboration done by our team, Altru, the consultants and our trade contractors. Over the next two months, the results of this accomplishment will become more visible as we erect the structural steel in this area.

We're enjoying the warmer weather, but preparing for what is surely still to come! Our current focus has been on preparing for our first slab-on-deck pour next week. As mentioned in previous "Construction Currents", BIM coordination has been ongoing, allowing us to install the sleeves through the metal deck. The concrete crews will install reinforcing before the concrete is placed at the end of the week.

January 27-31

With all of the pile driving complete, we are now focused on placing the concrete foundations where the tunnel once stood. Pile caps and grade beams are being placed to support the upcoming structural steel installation. We are also preparing for our first slab pour and beginning to enclose and temper the space below the first floor slab deck. Deck detailing and sleeving for through-slab penetrations are being coordinated to ensure that everything is “just right” before placement in the upcoming weeks. Much planning has taken place to sequence slab placement, and this will mark the beginning of 60 upcoming slab pours. From Jan. 20-24, construction crews are scheduled to perform the following activities:

  • Structural steel install
  • Mass excavation

Expect heavy truck traffic as excavation soil is hauled away from the site. Entrance and exits from the construction site will be staffed by construction traffic control flaggers. Construction activity is weather-dependent and subject to change based on conditions. All work during bulk excavation will take place 24/6 (Monday through Saturday, 24 hours each day to decrease the duration of this process).
