FAQs: Deep Foundation and Piling

What is the loud pounding noise? The noise is the foundation of our new hospital being driven deep into the ground. This process is called piling.

What is piling? Piling is the vertical structural element of a deep foundation, driven or drilled deep into the ground at the building site. The purpose of piling is to support the structure of a building.

When will piling take place and for how long? The piling process is expected to last 16 weeks, beginning during the week of May 13. Over 600 piles, totaling 19 miles of material, will be inserted into the ground as the foundational support for our new hospital.

What hours will piling take place? Piling will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at dark. Primarily, piling will take place Monday through Friday unless weather or operational delays cause adjustments.

Will piling affect the surrounding buildings? The piling will not affect the structure of the current buildings on our Columbia Road campus or in the neighborhood. Intensive monitoring of vibration is in place to ensure activity is within allowable limits.
