Description

The primary responsibilities of an EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for individuals who contact the emergency medical system. The EMT program at Altru will equip students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide the best possible methods to handle various medical emergencies and ambulance transport of ill or injured patients. Our EMT Training Program prepares our graduates for emergency medical intervention through a combination of in-class training and clinical experience.

 

What does the EMT-Basic training course involve? 

Our EMT training course, which is offered through Altru, is a 12 week course offered three times per year that includes a mixture of practical and lecture-based instruction. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in practical skills as well as on written examinations. In addition, each student will complete a 12-hour rotation in the hospital emergency room/ambulance ride along.

 

Studies covered include: CPR, anatomy and physiology, airway management, care of medical and traumatic emergencies, patient assessment, blood borne pathogen protection, patient extrication from damaged vehicles, HazMat response tactics, and introduction to incident command.

 

Students who successfully complete all course requirements will be eligible to take the EMT National Registry exams.

At the end of the course, the EMT Basic will have demonstrated competency in:

  • Patient assessment
  • Trauma Care
  • Managing medical emergencies
  • Utilizing Basic Life Support equipment
  • CPR
  • Fracture and spinal stabilization
  • Emergency Childbirth

You are eligible to enroll if:

  • You are 18 years of age
  • Students must be up to date on the following immunizations: 
    • Tetanus-Dephtheria (Td or Tdap)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Hepatitis B (HBV)
    • Varicella (Chicken pox)
    • Influenza (must be completed annually)

 

How much does the EMT course cost?         

The total course fee for the class is $800.  Should your circumstances change and you are unable to attend the course, a cancellation fee of $250 will apply to cover costs incurred in relation to your registration. Should you cancel 30 days after the start of the course, no refund will be issued. 

We reserve the right to cancel a course due to lack of enrollment, inclement weather and other circumstances as needed. In such cases, registrants will be notified and a full refund will be given.  

EMT National Testing Fees (optional, paid at the time of the course) are $250.  All prices are subject to change.  All registration fees are to be paid online.
