5 Ways To Avoid The Flu During Flu Season | Altru

Updated 10.12.2022

Flu is active across much of the United States right now. Check out our tips to keep yourself and your family healthy this flu season.

1. Get Enough Sleep

Aim for 7-9 hours per night for adults. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Make time for regular exercise (be sure to sanitize gym equipment before and after use). Fill your plate with fruits and veggies to keep your immune system in tip-top shape. Stay away from people who are sick.

2. Wash Your Hands More Often Than Usual

Use soap and warm water, then scrub for 20 seconds, or about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday.” Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.

3. Stay Home With Flu-Like Symptoms

Make an exception if you need medical care.

4. Clean and Disinfect Surfaces and Objects

Wash dishes, such as cups and water bottles, well before reusing them. Don’t share utensils.

Some common places you might not think to clean are:

  • Light switches
  • Appliance handles
  • Doorknobs
  • Remote controls

5. Get the Flu Shot

Flu shots are available for adults and children over six months of age. Call 701.780.2000 to schedule a flu shot, or visit for more information.
