Shyleen Hall

Medical School: University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Medical Interests: Full Spectrum Family Medicine with Obstetrical Care, Native American Health.

Personal Interests/Hobbies: Outside of work, my time is spent with my husband and children. We enjoy spending time outdoors and exploring the many playgrounds in town. We are trying to get into tent camping now and exploring local parks. I also enjoy playing volleyball, running and traditional Native American Beadwork.

Why Grand Forks/Altru: I chose Altru Family Medicine Residency Program because of their location, rural family medicine training, and their OB experience. I was able to spend time with the program as a medical student and knew then that both the faculty and residents would be great mentors, teachers and friends. I also knew I wanted to train somewhere where I had exposure to Native American patients and good training to prepare me to practice in rural areas, and I knew that I could get both at Altru FMR.

Medical Interests: I hope to improve the health literacy of my patients and empower them to spearhead their personal health. I also enjoy learning from cases that challenge me to think outside the box and reason through problems of which I am unfamiliar.

Personal Interests/Hobbies: I like to pass my time running (finished my first half marathon this year), cooking, playing board games and traveling.

Why Grand Forks/Altru: Grand Forks has been a great fit during medical school and residency due the people (especially my co-residents and our faculty), as well as being one of the larger towns in North Dakota!

The culture of this program is incredibly supportive and wanting to be a part of this program is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Mara Thorsen, MD

Mara Thorsen

Medical School: University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Medical Interests: I love the wide variety Family Medicine has to offer, but I particularly love to work with women and children. As a mom myself, I tend to gravitate toward these populations and can easily relate to their day-to-day concerns. After graduation I plan to do full spectrum family medicine, including hospital medicine and delivering babies.

Personal Interests/Hobbies: My two boys tend to take up all my extra time these days, but on a rare day to myself you can find me reading a good book, outside tending to my garden and flowers, working out, or listening to music.

Why Grand Forks/Altru: I'm a Grand Forks native and always knew I wanted to come back eventually. During residency interviews though, it was clear to me that Altru FMR was a perfect fit. It's the best combination of independence and supervision and we are supported by truly amazing faculty and staff.

Chris Waind, MD

Chris Waind

Medical School: University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Medical Interests: My medical interests include obstetrics, sports medicine, point-of-care ultrasound, any procedure I can get my hands on, and inpatient medicine.

Personal Interests/Hobbies: Some of my interests that I participate in my free time are board games, hockey, volleyball, softball, spike ball, kayaking, and lounging at the lake.

Why Grand Forks/Altru: I chose Altru FMR because the environment the faculty have cultivated makes you feel like you are a part of the family. Along with a great environment, the point-of-care ultrasound program is one of the best in the nation and you will get lots of hands on ultrasound experience.
