Cardiac Cath Lab

  • Observe the roles of the Cardiology Department physicians and staff
  • Learn about coronary anatomy, diagnosis and treatment of our patients
  • Observe experiences up close through our control room observation window
  • Types of procedures performed in Cardiology Department are cardiac caths, pacemakers and coronary stent placement  

Cardiology Inpatient Unit

  • Gain valuable experience in the medical field and provides an insight into the field of nursing
  • Observe the nurse providing direct patient care
  • Patient care includes, but is not limited to, administering medications, identifying and documenting significant changes of high risk situations, communicating patient progress, performing personal cares, providing education and individualizing patient care plans


  • Follow a RN chemotherapy infusion nurse.
  • Participants may observe labs being drawn from a portocath, IV arm starts, peripherally inserted cath draws and infusions that consist mainly of chemotherapy administration
  • Participants may experience the patient/nurse relationships that have formed through many months to years of treatment
  • Participants may be shown the process of mixing chemotherapy in the compounding room, while observing the roles of the pharmacist, pharm tech and figuring nurse

Diabetes Nurse Educator

  • Participants would be sitting in on an individual appointment with the nurse educator and a patient who has diabetes.  Our diabetes nurse educators see patients who have diabetes, either Type 1, Type 2, or gestational diabetes.  They teach them how to use a meter, how to give themselves insulin and give them the diabetes education they need to manage their own diabetes


  • Participants would be sitting in with patients who are seeing a dietitian as an individual appointment. Our dietitians see patients who have diabetes, weight loss goals, celiac disease, eating disorders, food allergies, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and many more

Emergency Room

  • Learnings will include: communication tactics to ensure effective care planning between the patient, physician and nursing staff, demonstrations of effective and efficient teamwork and validation of care and compassion in the emergency setting
  • May include direct observations of acutely ill and/or injured patients of all ages



  • Observe our team as they work closely with the interdisciplinary team to provide our patients with the best possible outcome and a successful transition to discharge.
  • Med/Surg  floor has a wide variety of medical patients including, but not limited to, diabetics, patients with COPD, CHF, and kidney disease
  • Observe patients as they recover from variations of surgery such as gall bladder surgery, appendectomies, bowel surgery, urology surgery, ENT surgery, mastectomies, amputations, and plastic surgery to name a few
  • Participants will observe many wounds in all phases of the healing process along with dressing changes including wound vac therapy
  • The age of our patients ranges from 18 to over 100 years old

Music Therapy

  • Participants will observe individual or group sessions offering music therapy interventions to patients experiencing pain, anxiety, extended hospital stay, or difficulty coping
  • Interventions are patient-centered around individual goals and objectives such as emotional expression through song writing, physical movement through active music making, pain management through patient-preferred music listening, or respiratory support through therapeutic singing
  • Patients seen by music therapy include all age ranges from infants to adults, though age and individual or group session preference may be requested and honored when possible

Neuro Diagnostic Lab

  • Participants will witness EEG and/or NCV. These are the two tests we perform. EEG (Electroencephalogram) is a recording of the electrical activity in the brain utilized mostly to evaluate for seizure activity. The recording is approximately twenty minutes with the entire test taking about an hour. The NCV (Nerve conduction study) is performed at the rehab. Different sites/ nerves are stimulated and the response is mapped on a computer giving the neurologist information as to the integrity of the nerves, this test is typically performed with an EMG (Electromyography).
  • The technician assists the physician with this test in which a needle electrode is used to determine the integrity of the muscles which are tested at rest and with activation


Nuclear Medicine

  • Participants will receive an overview of the department and how it functions 
  • Participants will learn about radiation safety precautions and regulatory requirements along with general nuclear medicine exams such as cardiac stress tests and scans such as lung, bone, gall bladder, and PE/CT will be observed by participants
  • Participants will receive an explanation of the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed, radioactive materials used, observation of patient exams, and how the scanners function to produce our exams

Nutrition Services/Dietitian

Oncology Inpatient Unit

  • Participants will follow a nurse and watch them interact with patients, do assessments, distribute medication and perform patient cares

Orthopedics Inpatient Unit

  • Participants will observe treatments and procedures on our unit with a nursing staff that adapts the experience with your interests and is very willing to teach a variety of disease processes, patient care procedures and surgical interventions
  • Participants will have interactions with patients/families, multidisciplinary team members (such as PT, OT, speech, RT, Physicians, Social work, Pharmacy)

Physical Therapy

  • Participants will spend time with a therapist in the discipline in which they are interested
  • Participants will observe p-close experiences to the position and therapeutic setting in order to help them choose which career path to follow

Radiation Therapy

  • Participants will observe the radiation therapists treating patients that need radiation because of cancer or some benign tumors. We have two machines that produce high dose radiation that can be pin pointed directly at the tumor cells without causing damage to surrounding healthy cells
  • Participants will see all the different jobs people have in radiation oncology including nurses, radiation oncologist, patient navigator, dosimetrists, and dieticians that care for our patients
  • Participants that are in or are interested in medical school will be allowed to visit with the radiation oncologist who can give lists of  radiation schools


Renal Dialysis

  • Participants will receive an explanation of the process of dialysis
  • Participants will observe dialysis patients during their 3-5 hour treatment as well as being connected and disconnected from the dialysis machine with either a central venous catheter or with large gauge needles that are placed into a fistula in the patients arm
  • Participants will see how blood is cleaned as it goes through the dialysis machine along with the extensive water treatment process that is necessary to operate a dialysis unit

Respiratory Therapy

  • Respiratory therapists work with patients of all ages and all areas of the hospital. Some of the daily duties of a therapist include delivering medication via nebulizers or inhalers, analyzing levels of oxygen and making adjustments, ventilator management, drawing arterial blood gases, and responding to respiratory emergencies
  • Participants will see respiratory therapist evaluate and treat patients with breathing conditions that may include COPD, asthma or lung conditions following a traumatic situation or surgery


  • Participants will change into surgical scrubs, receive an explanation of the front desk and status board (cases are added or canceled, what procedures and Dr.'s are in each room), and the patient admit process
  • Participants will receive a tour of the OR department
  • Participants will observe a variety of cases, with introduction to the staff and surgeon in the room, along with a step by step explanation of the surgical procedure being performed at the time

Women & Children
