About This Event
This class is designed to help children 8-10 years old who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia or struggle with reading, spelling and/or phonological awareness to help improve their overall phonological systems and understand how sounds go together to make words.
This class uses the Orton Gillingham comprehensive training method, which is a research-based, structured program that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds and building on those skills. The Orton Gillingham multi-sensory approach takes all 5 senses into account and allows children to learn in a way they do best.
The following topics will be covered:
- Phonological Awareness
- Word Recognition
- Spelling
- Phonics
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
Hooked on Reading is being led by Emily Altepeter, M.S. CCC-SLP. Emily has taken a special interest in working with children who demonstrate reading and writing deficits both in and out of the classroom setting. She is dedicated to helping children meet their full potential in the areas of literacy and has most recently, completed the Orton Gillingham comprehensive training through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education. Using this approach, Emily is excited to help children with writing and spelling challenges, those with a diagnosis of dyslexia, or those demonstrating dyslexic-like tendencies.
