Respiratory Diseases

Respiratory diseases can affect any region of the upper or lower respiratory tract. They can have a genetic factor, but they are often influenced by environmental factors, including allergens and pollutants. Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for respiratory and lung disease and is a primary cause of lung cancer.

Chronic respiratory diseases include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. These conditions cause continuous or recurring shortness of breath, and they can cause long-term changes in the way your body functions as you adjust to lower levels of oxygen. Chronic conditions can be managed and your symptoms reduced with medications and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Acute respiratory diseases are usually caused by an infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia. A severe pulmonary infection may require specialist treatment or close monitoring.

Our pulmonology team works closely with other specialties to provide patients with the best care possible for all types of respiratory disease.
