Winter Skin Care 101

February 01, 2022

Winter is the harshest season on our skin and not just because of the decreased temperature – it’s cold, windy, and indoor heating cause just as many problems. We automatically turn up the heater, take longer and/or hotter baths and showers. The result: dry, flaky skin. Especially on our faces and hands, where skin is thinner and there are less sebaceous glands that produce sebum, the oily substance that protects the skin’s microbiome barrier. Just as we change our wardrobes, we should also rotate certain skin care products as environmental and climate factors change in order to protect our skin. Here are some skin care tips to help get you and your skin through the winter months.

Winter Skin Care Tip #1: Hyaluronic Acid

Add the superstar ingredient, Hyaluronic Acid, to your moisturizing step. HA is a vital natural substance in our bodies with moisture-binding capacity. One HA molecule can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water. The results: Glowing, smooth and plump skin. Additional moisturizing ingredients to look for in products: glycerin, squalane, vitamin E, and ceramides.

Winter Skin Care Tip #2: Exfoliate

Weekly gentle exfoliating is critical to revive dull, dry skin and increase skin’s cellular turnover. Be mindful to not over exfoliate, as this can cause an excess secretion of sebum (oil), resulting in blemishes.

Winter Skin Care Tip #3: Protect with SPF

Protect your skin with a daily sunscreen to avoid harmful UV rays to prevent premature aging, increased hyperpigmentation, and protection from sun damage, such as melasma and brown spots. Even in the winter months, it is critical to wear SPF daily.

Winter Skin Care Tip #4: Try a Humidifier

Add moisture to the air and prevent skin from being dry or dehydrated with a humidifier in your home or workplace. Humidifiers also reduce the risk of infections and improve sinus health.

Winter Skin Care Tip #5: Don't Forget Your Lips!

Be certain to keep your lips hydrated and protected with SPF to prevent dryness, cracks, and UV damage. Periodically exfoliating and deeply moisturizing your lips is another great way keep lips soft and supple.

Winter Skin Care Tip #6: Things to Avoid...

Woman cleans face with wipe pads

Avoid alcohol-based products in the winter, as alcohol generally causes dryness. Look for ingredients: cetyl, stearyl, and cetearyl alcohol, which are less-drying forms of alcohol. Try a hydrating essence instead! Avoid washing your face with HOT water to avoid stripping it from natural oils and damaging the skin’s micro veins. Lastly, remember to always layer skin care products thinnest to thickest. If you feel you would benefit from an enhancing treatment from Truyu, here are a few that we recommend.

Dermaplaning – Manual exfoliation technique removing surface debris with a medical grade blade. Instantly improves skin’s brightness and texture, creating a healthier, more radiant appearance. Dermaplaning makes a great add-on to any facial treatment.

HydraFacial – Medical grade facial treatment that enhances skin’s elasticity, tone, texture, fine lines/wrinkles, vibrancy, and glow.

Chemical Peel – Treatment using acids to deeply exfoliate the skin to encourage skin cell turnover and renewal. Be sure to apply SPF after a chemical treatment, as it makes skin more sensitive to the sun.

Facial treatments are recommended every 4-6 weeks for optimal skin wellness.
