About Me

Dr. Katie Shahwan is a board certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs micrographic surgeon. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, as well as advanced cutaneous reconstruction. She regularly publishes on skin cancer, with research interests including high risk squamous cell carcinoma, extramammary Paget disease, cutaneous sarcoma, and reconstructive techniques. Dr. Shahwan also loves to teach, and holds assistant professorships at both the University of North Dakota and The Ohio State University medical schools. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two dogs, exploring Grand Forks, and mentoring the next generation of physicians.

One of eight surgeons across the US selected for the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) “Mohs Surgeons Leading the Future” program

Philosophy of Medicine

"The skin is not only the largest organ of the body, it's also the only part of us that we show the world. Receiving a cancer diagnosis is always scary, and learning that you need skin surgery (particularly on the face) can be overwhelming due to concerns about healing and scarring. I love being a Mohs micrographic surgeon, because the Mohs technique has the highest cure rate for these cancers while conserving as much normal skin as possible. I am also trained in advanced reconstructive techniques, which allows me to repair the wounds with excellent cosmetic results. I'm so excited to provide these services at Altru, and I am also looking forward to getting to know my patients and providing them with excellent care both in and out of the procedure room."
