Why are Orthopedic Procedures Performed?

Total or partial joint replacements are performed by orthopedic surgery specialists when your joint is damaged. The damage may come from arthritis, a past injury, or the natural wear and tear that comes with age. Orthopedic surgery specialists will usually recommend more conservative measures, such as physical therapy and exercise, before suggesting surgery. If conservative measures do not relieve your joint pain, you may benefit from replacement or repair surgery, whether of the knee, hip or shoulder.

Arthroscopic surgeries are used by orthopedic surgery specialists to look inside a patient’s joint. These procedures use small cameras and a screen to see inside a patient’s body without large incisions. Surgeons may use arthroscopic surgeries to diagnose or treat acute or chronic injuries or inflammation of the joints. Open surgeries are sometimes used in conjunction with arthroscopic surgeries, for example, to repair or reconstruct damaged cartilage or for carpal tunnel release.

Ligament and tendon repair can be performed arthroscopically or traditionally. One common type of ligament and tendon repair is rotator cuff repair. During rotator cuff surgery, the tendons are reattached to the patient’s bone, often using small rivets called suture anchors. Some anchors are made of metal. Others are made from materials designed to dissolve over time.

Pediatric orthopedic surgery can be used to treat children with complicated musculoskeletal problems, including developmental delays, problems with the arms, legs and spine, or skeletal dysplasias.

What to Expect From Orthopedic Surgery

Depending on the type of procedure your orthopedic surgery specialist will perform, you may need to prepare your home for recovery. Before your surgery, ask your doctor any questions about surgery, health concerns and recovery that you may have. After surgery, you may require medication for pain management. Your recovery may also include physical or occupational therapy.
