Erin Beck, NP, in dermatology at Truyu, was named Altru’s Provider of the Quarter for Quarter 4 of 2022. Here’s a chance to get to learn a bit more about Erin.
Why did you choose to work in healthcare?
I love people. The medical world is like solving a puzzle, yet you are impacting people’s lives. You work alongside people with the same vision of helping and serving others.
What is your educational background and career history?
I started with Altru in 2007 as a CNA. I graduated with my RN-BSN in December 2009 and transitioned to working as an RN at Altru on the telemetry and cardiology units. I later pursued my family nurse practitioner master’s degree and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2016. I have been at Truyu Dermatology since then and obtained my dermatology certified nurse practitioner board certification.
Before my time at Altru and as a dorky kid, I worked many different jobs: local grocery store, Subway, as a maintenance worker (I was really bad at that job), Starbucks and Development Homes.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The people. I love my patients, and I love my colleagues.
What has been the best day/moment of your career so far?
I don’t particularly have a best moment of my career. It has been a journey and I have enjoyed it along the way. I have met so many great people and developed life-long friendships with those around me. I am humbled and privileged to work with my friends every day.
What are your hobbies outside of work? Family?
I love flowers, golfing, running, music and spending the average routine days with my husband and children.
If you had an extra hour every day, what would you spend it doing?
I would spend it reading, devoting more time to prayer and having extra casual time with my family.
Where is your favorite destination you’ve visited, and why?
Ireland. It was a trip that my mother and father worked hard to pay for. We were together, exploring life. That’s what made it special.
What or who do you feel has had the biggest impact on your career so far?
I have been in a lot of different roles with Altru. My faith certainly impacts; however, Dr. Muus was my greatest mentor. I learned more about life than dermatology. He is an amazing man and the impact he has left on our department is priceless. He believed in me. When you have someone that believes in you and builds you up, even when you feel you are not worthy, THAT leads to greatness.
According to Dr. Muus, “The disease states seen in day-to-day medical practice often become very repetitious. Developing a keen interest in people and the art of making them feel important will supply new zest to your medical practice. As an added bonus, you will do a better job of ridding the patient of their disease.”
How does working at Altru support your lifestyle?
I am very fortunate to have amazing work-life balance. I work very hard during the time I spend in the clinic doors, but my team and management always strive to make family a priority.
What excites you most about Altru’s future?
We are ALL a team with a vision and a primary goal of improving the health of those around us. As long as that is always at the forefront, amazing things will continue to happen.
How do you measure success?
I certainly find success in improving someone’s health; however, I make it a goal to make at least one person smile per day.
