Abdominal pain

Definitions

Description

Pain from inside the belly or from the belly's outer muscle wall, ranging from mild and temporary to severe and needing emergency care.

Self-care

For heartburn or gas, try nonprescription antacids or anti-gas medicines, and eat smaller meals. Don't take aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve), as these can make some conditions worse.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional immediately if there is:

  • Severe pain that gets worse with movement.
  • Fever.
  • Vomiting or bloody diarrhea.
  • A swollen belly, also called the abdomen.
  • Chest pain or pressure.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if the pain:

  • Keeps happening or won't go away.
  • Affects sleep.
