Bicuspid aortic valve
Definitions
Description
When the aortic valve has two flaps instead of three.
Overview
Bicuspid aortic valve is when the aortic valve has two flaps instead of three. It is a heart problem present at birth. Heart valve flaps open and close with each heartbeat. The aortic valve flaps control blood flow between the heart and the body's main artery, called the aorta.
Symptoms
Symptoms may happen if the valve opening narrows. Symptoms also can occur if blood leaks backward across the valve. Symptoms may include chest pain, fainting, shortness of breath or difficulty exercising.
Treatments
Medicines may be given to treat symptoms. Surgery may be done to repair or replace the aortic valve.
