Dermatomyositis

Description

Dermatomyositis (dur-muh-toe-my-uh-SY-tis) is an autoimmune condition in which swelling and irritation, called inflammation, attacks the body's tissues.

Overview

Dermatomyositis isn't common. It can affect adults and children. In adults, dermatomyositis most often happens in the late 40s to early 60s. In children, it most often appears at ages 5 to 15.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a rash on the face and eyelids, and in areas around the nails, knuckles, elbows, knees, chest and back. Muscle weakness can affect the hips, thighs, shoulders, upper arms and neck. The weakness affects both the left and right sides of the body and tends to get worse over time.

Treatments

Treatment can improve the skin and muscle strength and function. Treatment may include medicines, physical therapy or other therapies.
