Fever
Definitions
Description
A short-term rise in body temperature that's often caused by an infection.
Self-care
Get plenty of rest and drink fluids. Dress in light clothing and keep room temperature cool. Medicines with acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be suggested for discomfort. Do not give aspirin to children, as it may cause a rare, serious condition called Reye's syndrome.
When to seek immediate medical care
Get medical care right away for:
- Babies younger than 3 months with a rectal temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher.
- People of any age who have a fever with trouble breathing, chest pain, stiff neck, severe headache, painful urination or a rash that doesn't fade when pressed.
- People of any age who have a fever along with a seizure lasting longer than five minutes. Also get emergency help if, after a seizure, a child doesn't recover quickly.
When to make a doctor's appointment
Talk with a healthcare professional for:
- Children age 3 months to 3 years with a temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 degrees Celsius) or higher if fever is the only symptom.
- Children older than age 1 year if fever is the only symptom of illness and lasts for more than 2 to 3 days.
- Children with a fever who seem very ill, develop new symptoms or seem to be getting worse.
- Adults if fever is the only symptom and lasts 4 to 5 days.
