Genu varum

Description

Genu varum, also called bowlegs, is a condition in which the legs curve outward at the knees. When a person stands with their feet together, the knees stay apart.

Overview

Genu varum is common in infants and young children. It is often a typical part of growth. It usually gets better on its own as children begin to walk and grow. Sometimes, bowlegs may be caused by conditions such as issues with bone growth or vitamin deficiencies. In adults, arthritis can cause genu varum.

Symptoms

The main symptom of genu varum is a gap between the knees when feet are together. Most children do not have pain from the condition. In more serious cases, it can cause knee pain, trouble with walking and uneven wear on shoes.

Treatment

Treatment for genu varum depends on age and the underlying cause. No treatment is usually needed for young children. If genu varum does not improve or is more serious, treatment may include leg braces or physical therapy. Rarely, surgery may be needed to straighten the legs.
