Self-care
For minor injuries, apply pressure to any visibly bleeding wound, and elevate the area. Apply ice for up to 20 minutes several times daily, and if painful, take acetaminophen.
When to seek immediate medical care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Persistent and excessive bleeding that doesn't stop with constant pressure
- Sudden, severe headache
- New-onset constant headache
- Moderate to severe injury
- Persistent painful swelling that doesn't improve with self-care
When to make a doctor's appointment
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Slow to heal bruising
- White area of the eye fills with blood
- Focused pain and swelling with bruise
