Hip pain
Definitions
Description
Pain on the inside or outside the hip, which can be caused by arthritis, injuries or other health issues.
Self-care
Limit activities that involve bending at the hip or putting direct pressure on it. Try not to sleep on the affected side. And try not to sit for long periods. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the hip to lessen inflammation. A warm bath or shower may help relax muscles and prepare them for gentle stretching exercises that may lessen pain.
When to seek immediate medical care
Seek emergency help if the hip:
- Looks very different than usual.
- Can't move or support weight.
- Feels very painful.
- Quickly swells up.
- Is painful and comes with fever or chills.
When to make a doctor's appointment
See a healthcare professional if self-care measures such as rest, ice and heat don't help.
