A condition of too little iron in the body.
Overview
Iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia, a condition of too few healthy red blood cells in the body. Iron deficiency can lead to heart conditions. In pregnancy, iron deficiency puts the unborn baby at risk of delays in developing.
Symptoms
Symptoms may include feeling tired, weak, dizzy and short of breath. People with iron deficiency also may have a headache, brittle nails and not want to eat.
Treatments
Treatment includes taking iron supplements and finding and treating the cause.
