Kyphosis

An excessive forward rounding of the upper back.

Overview

Kyphosis is a condition in which the back curves forward, causing a rounded back. In older adults, kyphosis often happens when bones in the spine become weak. They start to compress or fracture. Other types of kyphosis can happen in infants or teenagers. These types are usually caused by issues with how the spine forms or by spinal bones that slowly become wedge-shaped over time.

Symptoms

Mild kyphosis may cause few or no symptoms. More-serious kyphosis can lead to pain and changes in appearance.

Treatment

Treatment for kyphosis depends on the cause and how severe the condition is. Serious kyphosis can cause pain and be disfiguring. Treatment may include medicines for pain relief, osteoporosis medicines, physical therapy and sometimes surgery.
