Overview

Metabolic alkalosis is a condition in which too much of the chemical bicarbonate in the body upsets the body's acid balance. Common causes include vomiting and use of water pills, called diuretics.

Symptoms

There might be no symptoms. Or symptoms might be linked to the underlying cause. They might include extreme tiredness, muscle weakness or cramps, and irregular heartbeats. Sometimes there can be confusion, seizures and coma.

Treatments

Treatment aims to restore the natural acid balance in the body. Medicines might be used to treat the underlying cause.
