Periodontal disease
Definitions
Overview
Periodontal pathology is disease of the gums and tissue supporting the teeth. It starts as a bacteria-laden film on teeth (plaque). It can progress to gum inflammation (gingivitis). Finally, it may lead to a breakdown of the surrounding tissue and bones (periodontitis). Prevention with daily brushing and regular dental checkups is key.
