Rib fracture
Definitions
Description
An injury that occurs when one of the bones in the rib cage cracks.
Overview
A fractured rib is usually a result of a fall or an accident or from contact sports. Prolonged coughing and sports with repetitive movement, such as golf or rowing, also can cause a rib fracture.
Symptoms
Symptoms include pain when taking a deep breath, pressing on the injured area, or bending or twisting the body.
Treatments
In most cases, fractured ribs heal on their own in 1 to 2 months. Being less active and regularly putting ice on the area can help with healing and pain relief. Pain medicines you can buy without a prescription can make it easier to breathe deeply, which lowers the risk of pneumonia and other lung conditions.
