Altru Breaks Ground on New Hospital

Posted OnJune 05, 2019

A new chapter in the history of Altru Health System begins today with the official groundbreaking for the new Altru Hospital. The new facility will consist of 7 stories and 528,000 square feet with expanded surgical and emergency services, the most up-to-date technology, and a population approach to healthcare to meet our patients’ changing needs while securing our region’s healthcare future for generations to come. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2022 and patient care will begin in the new hospital near the end of 2022.

“Advancing the way care is delivered requires state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide patients with a healing environment and a space that can accommodate new technologies as they become available,” said Brad Wehe, CEO, Altru Health System. “Altru is entering a bold new era in care, with a focus on deploying the latest technology, expanding surgical and emergency services, and embracing a population approach to healthcare.”

Designed by the nationally recognized JLG Architects, a local company, the concept of a Hospital in the Park is innovative and based on the philosophy of patient-centered care. The facility will feature individual patient rooms with abundant natural light – proven to speed the healing process – and ample space for family members to gather.

“Altru’s new hospital will serve the local community and the entire region with excellent patient care, expanded services, and provide a source of education for tomorrow’s healthcare leaders,” says Steven Weiser, MD, Chief Medical Officer. “This new facility and its design would not be possible without the collaborative efforts of many dedicated employees determined to transform care and our patients’ experience.”

Located just to the north of the existing Altru Hospital, the new Altru Hospital is a component of a bold new era in care that positions Altru as a medical destination, providing an economic boost that attracts new businesses and families looking for a vibrant place to call home. The initial design phase is completed and site preparation, excavation, and the deep foundation are being set. For updates and to follow the construction process, visit altru.org/future.
