Altru’s New Hospital

As we prepare for the move to Altru’s new hospital, we’ve compiled 11 of the most important things for you to know, as well as resources with even more information to help our patients and visitors during this transition. 

11 Things to Know About Altru’s New Hospital Move

1. OPENING DATE: Altru’s new hospital will open Sunday, January 19, 2025.
2. ER: At 6 a.m. on January 19, the ER in the new hospital will open. Traffic will be rerouted to the new ER.
3. MOVING PATIENTS: All patients will move on January 19 through a temporary connector that goes from the current hospital to the new.
4. GUESTS: Guests of patients in the hospital will be assigned a place to gather in the new hospital until they can join their loved one in their new room. Guests will be limited to ensure a safe and efficient transfer.
5. PARKING: We will have a temporary parking plan until the permanent patient parking lot is complete. Signs will guide our guests.
6. FREE VALET & SHUTTLE SERVICE: For hospital patients and guests, there will be a FREE valet service at the hospital entry. A valet will park your car and return it at the end of your visit. If you choose to park your own car, there will be a free shuttle taking people to the hospital.
7. BEHAVIORAL HEALTH: Also on January 19, Altru 860 will become the Altru Behavioral Health Center for both inpatient and outpatient behavioral health patients.
8. WHAT REMAINS THE SAME: Most of the services in the hospital will remain the same on day one. The address for our new hospital (1200 S. Columbia Rd.) and most of the phone numbers will also remain the same. Your scheduled appointments and processes to schedule will remain the same, too.  
9. 1300 COLUMBIA BUILDING: This location will be renamed Altru Clinic. Spaces in this building will be remodeled, and new services will move into this building, like outpatient dialysis and hyperbaric oxygen treatment, while other clinic services already located here will remain.  
10. WHAT’S NEXT: Once the move to the new hospital is complete, we will begin the process of decommissioning and demolishing the old hospital. Upon completion, the patient parking lot and water retention pond will be built in its place.

Fast Facts

• Altru’s new hospital will open on January 19, 2025. On that day, the parking plan for Altru’s Columbia Rd. campus will change.  
• This change will be temporary and will be in place during the demolition of the current hospital. The anticipated timeline is 12-18 months.
• We are encouraging all patients and guests to use our new FREE valet service.
• A free shuttle will also be available on weekdays from 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. from the hospital patient parking lot located northwest of the new hospital.  

New Hospital, Altru Behavioral Health Center & Altru Cancer Center

• Patients and guests for the new hospital, Behavioral Health Center, and Cancer Center will all share one lot that is located on the northwest corner of Altru’s Columbia Rd. campus. Handicap accessible parking spots will be available just north of the Cancer Center.  

New Hospital Emergency Room Parking

• Patients and guests to the new ER will park right outside of the ER entry. The ER is located on the east side of Altru’s new hospital, which is facing Columbia Rd.

FREE Valet & Shuttle Service

• There will be a FREE valet service for new hospital patients and guests. Just drive up to the main entrance of the new hospital, and a valet will park your car. Once you are done at the hospital, they will bring your car back for you.  
• For patients and guests who choose to park their own vehicles, there will be a shuttle to bring them to the main entrance.

Bus Stop

• The city bus will stop in its usual location in front of Altru Clinic (Altru 1300). Patients will be able to call for a shuttle to take them over to the new hospital, if needed.

• Patients and guests will continue to park in the same areas.

As Altru continues to work building a better tomorrow for our community and region, a lot of moving parts need to happen before our first patient occupies our new hospital in early 2025. These moving parts include remodeling of existing buildings and relocations of departments from the current hospital to clinic space.
