New Hospital

The Future of Local Healthcare

Altru’s new hospital, opening for patients in early 2025, has been thoughtfully designed for our patients, visitors and team members. The new hospital, as part of the “hospital in a park,” will be surrounded by beautiful green space with walking paths and ponds.

As a community health system, Altru has provided outstanding healthcare for over 130 years. As we plan for the next 130 years, we are committed to making a difference for generations to come. This new hospital is a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence for the health of our community.

  • Our new hospital, spread over 552,000 sq. ft., will include:
  • Seven above ground floors
  • Space for 226 licensed patient beds
  • A 16-bed observation unit
  • An entire unit capable of being operated at negative pressure

Key Patient Benefits

  • Expanded emergency services that are easier to locate with a canopied drop off for patients that is separate from ambulance entry. Specialty exam rooms for behavioral health and victims of sexual assault.
  • Ambulance garage with better flow and a dedicated lane for regional ambulances.
  • Extra-large trauma elevator allowing for continuous care when every second counts.
  • Dedicated trauma operating room equipped with advanced tools, getting our patients on the road to recovery even quicker.
  • State-of-the-art operating rooms with advanced technology, opening the door for less invasive procedures and faster healing times.
  • Private pre/post-operative rooms during private and sometimes difficult times.
  • Private NICU rooms filled with natural light for bonding with new baby 24/7.

  • Spiritual Center is a place for reflection, prayer, and spiritual care when one’s soul needs nourishment.
  • Space within the hospital for future development as healthcare continues to evolve.
  • Largest ORs in the current hospital are approximately the same size as the smallest ORs in the new hospital.
  • Summer 2023, approximately 450 on-site workers daily with about 60% of them Spanish speaking. Two student interpreters from UND were hired and brought on site.
  • Over 2,000 doors and over 250 window openings.
  • 6,000 cubic yards of concrete in the foundation, weighing roughly 23,400,000 pounds.

  • The new hospital has 2,809,874 square feet of drywall, approximately 65 acres and equal to 58,539 twelve-foot sheets of drywall.
  • The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system in the new hospital consists of approximately 800,000 lbs. of sheet metal.

Estimated values for the 2023 direct community impact of the Altru New Hospital project (a formal study was not completed):

  • $169M worth of work completed on the new hospital during 2023.
  • $90M in revenue was generated for businesses in the greater Grand Forks area.
  • Over 3,000 individuals had direct income because of this project.
  • Current hospital is 544,000 sq ft with 6 floors and 257 licensed patient beds. We are in line with the national trend of fewer patient rooms due to shortened hospital stays and more outpatient services.
  • Current hospital, we have 20 monitored patient rooms in the ER. In our new hospital, we will have 34 monitored patient rooms.
  • In 2023, more than 34,000 ER visits, more than 11,000 hospital discharges, and ambulances dispatched more than 11,000 times. See additional information in the 2023 Annual Report.
  • Substantial completion will be October 1, 2024, when PCL/Community hands over the keys to Altru.
  • Facility fit-out is between October 2024 and early 2025. This is the period when most construction is complete, with a focus on installing remaining furniture, technology, medical equipment and supplies. This phase requires comprehensive coordination to ensure the facility is ready to support critical regulatory inspections and staff education/training before first patient.
  • Working budget of $470 million.
