Acromegaly

Definitions

Description

A rare condition in adults that causes some bones, organs and other tissues to grow bigger.

Overview

With acromegaly, a small gland in the brain called the pituitary gland makes too much growth hormone. This usually happens due to a tumor of the pituitary gland. The tumor isn't cancer.

Symptoms

Acromegaly symptoms involve slow changes over years. The ears and lips may thicken. The nose may broaden. The hands and feet may grow large. The brow or jaw may jut out. The skin may become coarse and oily.

Treatments

Acromegaly treatments such as surgery, medicine and radiation can lower the risk of other health conditions called complications. Treatment also can improve many acromegaly symptoms.
