Broken collarbone (clavicle fracture)

Definitions

Description

A break in the bone connecting the breastbone and shoulder. This also is known as a clavicle fracture.

Overview

Infants sometimes break their collarbone while being born. For others, common causes include falls, sports injuries and traffic accidents.

Symptoms

Symptoms include pain, swelling, and a grinding or cracking sound when moving the shoulder.

Treatments

Treatment includes an arm sling to keep the bone still, pain medicines and physical therapy. Serious breaks may need surgery.
