Overview

An embolism is a medical emergency. It happens when something blocks an artery and stops the flow of blood. A blood clot, fat, air bubble or other substance can cause an embolism. Some embolisms may lead to cardiac arrest.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on where the embolism is in the body. For example, an embolism in the lungs might cause chest pain and shortness of breath. Other symptoms of an embolism may include a fast heartbeat, changes in skin color, numbness or tingling, and cold skin.

Treatments

Treatment may depend on where the embolism is in the body. Treatment may include medicines to break up blood clots. Sometimes emergency surgery is needed to prevent complications or death.
