Ganglion cyst

Description

A noncancerous lump, often on the tendons or joints of the wrists and hands.

Overview

A ganglion cyst is a small, round lump filled with a jellylike fluid. It most often forms near a joint or tendon in the wrist, fingers, ankles, feet or knees. A ganglion cyst is not cancer. The condition can interfere with joint movement.

Symptoms

A ganglion cyst is typically small. It is round or oval. A ganglion cyst can grow in size over time or get larger with activity. It can be painful if it presses on a nerve.

Treatments

A ganglion cyst often clears on its own. If it causes pain or gets in the way of joint movement, it can be drained or taken out with surgery.
