Hypercholesterolemia

Definitions

Description

A high level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the blood.

Overview

Hypercholesterolemia involves having too much LDL cholesterol, also known as the "bad" cholesterol. LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of arteries and may lead to blockages. It can raise the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Symptoms

Hypercholesterolemia has no symptoms. A blood test is the only way to find out if a person has it.

Treatments

Hypercholesterolemia treatment often includes medicine to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet and getting exercise also are important.
