Hyperlipidemia
Definitions
Description
High levels of fats in the blood called lipids.
Overview
With hyperlipidemia, the blood has high levels of lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Hyperlipidemia can cause buildups of cholesterol, fats and other substances that limit blood flow. This raises the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Symptoms
Hyperlipidemia has no symptoms. A blood test is the only way to find out if a person has the condition.
Treatments
Hyperlipidemia treatment may include medicine. Medicine can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet and getting exercise also are key.
