Hyperplasia is an increase in regular cell production that is not typical. It may mean precancerous changes. There are various types of hyperplasia. Each affects a different tissue or organ. Noncancerous prostate gland enlargement and a precancerous condition in which cells accumulate in a breast duct are examples.
