Overview

Hypertension is high blood pressure. It happens when the force of blood against the artery walls is too high. It can lead to heart attack, stroke and other serious health conditions. A healthy lifestyle can prevent hypertension.

Symptoms

There may not be symptoms. Some people have headaches, nosebleeds or shortness of breath.

Treatment

Treatment includes lifestyle changes. Don't smoke, eat a healthy diet with less salt and limit alcohol. Also get regular exercise and keep a healthy weight. Some people need medicines.
